The Production

The production was originally staged on behalf of Mole Valley Script Writers Group. The first performance won writer Tony Earnshaw the Sir Michael Caine Best New Writing award and the adjudicator broke with tradition to jointly award Tom Cobley and Chris Westgate the Sir Michael Caine Best Actor trophy. More awards followed, at every festival entered, including Best Director for Stefan Dubois.  Awards now include Best Actor, Best Director, Best New Writing and Best Play.  This award winning team then appeared in Edinburgh.

Reviews

The Door met with critical acclaim in Edinburgh. Fringe Review awarded it 4 stars, called it a 'gripping play' and 'an enthralling piece' ending with 'Imbued with humour, pathos, tension and an explosive finale, this is a piece of theatre worth going a long way to see'. Three Weeks went one better, awarding 5 stars and saying 'An insightful production with unbounded depth of meaning, 'The Door' presents a blissful marriage between a fascinating script and captivating acting. A must see.’


The Cast

Chris Westgate (Ryan)

This is Chris’s third visit to the fringe in a busy schedule which includes acting with various theatre companies, directing, running a company that performs murder mysteries, and work as a voiceover artist. Stage roles include Don Carlos (Don Carlos, Windsor Theatre Guild), Andy (The Office Party, Rose Street Players) and Jake (Fit Piece, Windsor Fringe and Edinburgh Fringe).

Tom Cobley (Boyd)

Tom's past experience ranges from voice over work, through video direction to a wide range of roles with a number of theatre groups over the last 18 years and includes spells as a 'living prop' at Cliveden.  Productions include Wind in the Willows, Don Carlos, Comic Potential, and numerous pantomimes.  Roles include Alfred Doolittle in Pygmalion, Banquo in Macbeth and Eric Birling in An Inspector Calls.

The Director

Stefan Dubois is a member of the Directors Guild of Great Britain, having spent many years as a professional actor, working with the RSC, Theatre de Complicite and a number of other companies before moving into writing and directing. He was recently awarded the Best Director Trophy at Woking for his work on The Door.
