Tony Earnshaw's Plays

Tony's plays span a wide variety of subject matter but all mix topical debate with lighter, more humourous content, keeping the audience's interest whilst dealing with areas that could otherwise be too weighty to be considered entertainment.

Tony is currently working on 'Grimm Reality', a play with music and on 'Bride and Prejudice'.

The Door in Pimlico and Henley 2011

'A wonderful production with fantastic performances of a very strong script' was the verdict of the reviewer - and the audience seemed to agree. Add to that a success in terms of fund raising and everyone went home from this year's New Ways Pimlico performance pleased. And there will be more collaborations with New Ways - for New York with The Door and for Visiting Time at several venues in 2011. Meanwhile we had a very successful run at the Henley fringe, selling out and enjoying very positive audience and critical reaction.

More time to focus on writing

In 2008, Tony Earnshaw made changes in his professional life allowing him to spend more time writing alongside a continuing career in the financial services industry. He now spends two to three days a week on his writing.

His first play since making this lifestyle change was The Door which won the Best New Writing award in the Leatherhead Drama Festival 2009 and which has now been accepted for publication. Encouraged by this success, Tony has written a number of other one act plays - ORC, which deals with risk management in a financial services firm, Grimm Reality, a political fairy tale, Blessed Assurance and  Visiting Time. To these can be added a number of shorter plays and The Ocean's Calm, Tony's first full length play.

Visiting Time change won the Best New Writing Award in the Leatherhead Drama Festival 2011 - the second of these awards in two entries.

A scene from The Door

Varied subject matter, common themes

The subject matter of the plays varies but some common themes emerge.

The Door deals with recent issues of foreign policy, the tension between following orders and conscience and the adequacy of provisioning for the armed forces but takes in the existence of God, the best James Bond and the failings of reality TV along the way.

The Door

ORC looks at financial organisations and the failure to control risk against the backdrop of the credit crisis.

Grimm Reality explores current political and environmental issues through the prism of characters of myth and legend.

Blessed Assurance is the story of two brothers, the impact of experience on faith, the strain of a vocation on marriage and the struggle for truth.

Visiting Time deals with AIDS, aid, friendship and betrayal.

All are concerned with issues and struggles, all are populated by characters we can relate to, all are infused with humour.
